Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition’s overdose and fentanyl reporting system provides real-time surveillance across Iowa to support public health efforts to respond to an overdose or fentanyl in drug supplies around the state. The system links community members, emergency personnel, and other stakeholders to a back-end mapping tool to track overdoses and reactive fentanyl tests to stimulate real-time response and strategic analysis across the state. Information collected does not include personal identifying information on the victim or individual reporting.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times as powerful as morphine and up to 50 times as powerful as heroin. IHRC offers fentanyl testing strips and related education, as many folks may not be aware of the existence of Fentanyl in their drugs. This allows people to better evaluate the potency of their drugs, and therefore, reduce their risk of an overdose. By surveying community members and health providers on the results of their fentanyl screening, we can improve consumer notification of drug supply poisoning.
